October 16, 2007
Studies have found that the sensitivity to salt can expose you to the risk of high blood pressure, other cardiovascular disorders and at times, even death. Salt sensitivity increases the risk to life irrespective of whether the person has high blood pressure or not.
With the onslaught of age, people who are more sensitive to salt run a higher risk of high blood pressure disorders. In a salt abundant environment like that of central US, the problem is likely to aggravate even more. People who are salt sensitive should take preventive measures like reduce salt intake to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and the risk to life.
What is salt sensitivity?
It is a measure of how blood pressure would react/respond to decrease in salt intake. Apart from hypertension, salt sensitivity also increases the risk of enlarging the main pumping chamber of the heart resulting in improper functioning and likelihood of kidney problems.
In order to reduce salt intake keep an eye on the sodium content in processed foods like luncheon meat, prepared cheeses, canned foods and vegetables and baked products.
