The stigma of addiction

Date January 10, 2008

A drug addiction is a multifaceted activity, often marked with uncontrollable crave for drugs and a persistency for them even in the face of very negative consequences.

Basically drugs are a kind of pain killers. A persistent use of these substances results in their acceptance by the brain and it becomes difficult when a person tries not to take them.

The urge to consume drugs can take priority over the life of an individual and trigger a wide array of dysfunctional behaviors and poor health habits. The abuse of these substances also increases the occurrence of cardiovascular disorders, stroke, cancer, hepatitis and lung disorders.

Since this addiction is a disorder of chronic nature, any abstinence from it would require sustained and repeated drug treatment.

A rehabilitation program plays an important role in the overall treatment strategy.  Some practices and methods of drug rehab programs have been able to stabilize the life of patients in a dramatic way.

But given the wide variety and types of patient preferences and limited resources at disposal, a dedicated health care system characterized by specialized treatments has become imperative including that for alcohol rehab.

Breaking the vicious cycle of addiction is the primary objective of such drug rehab programs, but this only is not the sole objective. The addict’s addiction could have resulted in formation of some other habits which needs to be addressed first. The financial and legal ramifications arising out of such addiction also would require the attention.

A complete drug rehabilitation process comprises of two dependencies – the physical dependency and the psychological dependency. Eroding the physical dependency includes a detoxification process to support the withdrawal symptoms from the use of drugs. A psychological dependency is taken care of by teaching the patient new ways on interacting with a drug free environment.

Recent studies have also indicated that most of the people suffering from alcohol or drub addiction have chemical imbalances in their bodies. This makes the recovery process a little difficult. These imbalances can be corrected trough proper and improved healthy diet, nutritional supplements and a very healthy lifestyle.
