Varicose Vein Symptoms
May 18, 2009
A varicose vein is the term given to widened and twisted blood vessels that are found just beneath the skin. Blood gathers around the veins causing them to swell and bulge out. Varicose vein symptoms are hard to detect. It takes a keen eye and mind to discern the symptoms. In many cases, varicose veins may be painless.
The signs that may indicate the presence of varicose veins are a dark purple, blue or grey color on the affected area, with the veins looking twisted and bulging. You could also experience a dull ache, tiredness and heaviness in the legs, especially after spending much time standing or sitting. Other signs include swelling and muscle cramping on the legs, especially around the ankles. The swelling occurs as a result of fluid leaking through the walls of the damaged veins into the surrounding tissues. You may also experience some persistent itching around the affected area.
