Ways to reduce your health care costs

Date February 6, 2008

The health care costs for individuals have gone over the roof over the past few years. Consequently the health insurance costs have also headed north. With premiums going high and the fear of recession looming large over the US and Europe, the citizens are going to find it increasingly difficult to manage their health care costs.

Let us look at some ways to cut costs and without reducing on the quantum of the medical cover and quality of medicare.

If you have been paying your yearly premiums for a comprehensive insurance plan, you can look at downgrading it to a budget plans. This would mean you would be excluding certain kinds of treatments and diseases from your cover. But before doing so, get yourself fully diagnosed to ensure that you don’t exclude some treatment or disorder that you might be prone to.

Another way of reducing on the costs is to agree to subscribe to higher excess clause. The higher excess clause refers to the value of money that the insured will have to cough up during the claim process. It’s like co-payment concept where the insured bears a part of the claim amount. Before opting for the clause, do conduct a cost-benefit analysis to ensure that you don’t end up paying more as co-payer against what you would have paid as premium without if you would not have opted for the clause.
