What Is Diabulimia?
October 5, 2009
Diabulimia is an under-recognized eating disorder that is commonly found among people who suffer from Type 1 diabetes. The word Diabulimia is derived from Diabetes and Bulimia, an eating disorder. Diabulimia is not widely recognized as a medical condition, but it can turn fatal if it continues to be ignored. Type 1 diabetes patients who withhold the recommended daily insulin shots while purging food that they have already eaten as a way of loosing weight are practicing Diabulimia.
It is not easy to know when a person is Diabulimic. This is because those people who use the method to loose weight usually hide behind the false curtain of the effects of diabetes. One of the most dangerous effects of Diabulimia is the presence of high blood sugar in the body. High blood sugar has been known to cause crippling damage to the nerve and circulatory system. Diabulimia can be treated through counseling and medical intervention.
